OpenVPN's default cipher, BF-CBC, is affected by this attack. Indeed, AES is today's standard. It's the fastest and more secure cipher available today. SEED and Camellia are not vulnerable to date but are slower than AES and relatively less trusted. Of the currently supported ciphers, OpenVPN currently recommends using AES-256-CBC or AES-128-CBC.

Running out of ideas for bug checking. I installed OpenVPN (2.3.4) using this guide onto Raspbian Jessie lite (first time playing in Linux without a GUI to fall back on when my limited cli-fu runs out of ideas), and got past the fact that easy-rsa lives somewhere different since that guide was written.. ovpn exported, installed on iphone (OpenVPN Connect 1.0.7), all seems okay.
